When a hot bath just isn't relaxing. Sea surface temperatures are at record levels

I'm concerned.

As we edge closer to summer here in Australia, I can’t help but feel deeply concerned about the state of our oceans. Right now, the sea surface temperatures in the waters to the north of Australia are a staggering 4 degrees Celsius above average. This isn’t just a number—it’s a glaring red flag for our environment and our way of life.

Warmer oceans mean an increased risk of more intense cyclones, as well as severe coral bleaching events that devastate the Great Barrier Reef, a natural treasure we’re so proud of. These rising temperatures can also disrupt marine ecosystems, impacting everything from fish populations to the livelihoods of those who depend on them.

As we brace for the heat of an Australian summer, it’s clear that this isn’t just an environmental issue; it’s a challenge that affects us all. It’s a wake-up call to prioritise sustainable practices and push for action on climate change.

Now on that, as a beekeeper, warm weather might mean better conditions for bees....but more likely, more sea surface evaporation means more rain...and more severe rain events. Which isn't good for bees - or humans :(

The health of our oceans reflects the health of our planet, and right now, they’re crying out for our help.
